The Medical Council on Alcohol

Who we are

The Medical Council on Alcohol is a charity concerned with the effects of alcohol on health. We were founded in 1967 by a group of doctors from a range of different specialties, at a time when alcohol services were poorly developed.  It remains one of our unique features that our members come from all medical specialties,  reflecting the wide-ranging effects of alcohol on health and the need to co-ordinate activities to address these.  Doctors still comprise the majority of our members,  thus the Medical Council on Alcohol is the voice of the medical profession on alcohol. We have a small London office where our office manager and the medical director are based.  Our activities are led by three committees made up of members from throughout the UK who volunteer their time – the Executive Committee, the Education Committee and the Journal Committee.

Our mission

Our mission is to improve the understanding and management of alcohol related health problems.  Alcohol related harm causes incalculable misery to individuals  and their families and costs the NHS 2.7 billion pounds each year.  Despite this, the amount of medical education devoted to alcohol-related harm is surprisingly little. We seek to ensure that doctors, medical students and other health professionals are aware of the risks associated with alcohol both for their patients and for their own health, and act effectively to address these. Given the relentless increase in alcohol related harm at the individual and societal level, this aim is as important today as when were founded.
