The MCA has three main committees ( Executive, Education and Journal) and one sub committee ( Investment & Strategy). Every committee reports to the Executive Committee and at least one member of each committee is on the Executive board. Each committee is an essential part of ensuring that the MCA meets it's objectives.
The Executive Committee is chaired by Professor Colin Drummond:
Prof Colin Drummond, MBChB, MD, FRCP, FRCPsych, FFPH, FRCGP(Hon), Professor of Addiction Psychiatry, Head of the Alcohol Research Group, and Consultant Psychiatrist at the National Addiction Centre, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Professor Drummond is the Chairman of the Medical Council on Alcohol.
The Education Committee is chaired by Dr Iain Smith:
Dr Iain Smith, MD MB ChB BSc (Hons) FRCPsych, Dr Smith studied medicine at the University of Glasgow as an undergraduate 1976-1983 achieving a First-Class Honours B.Sc. in Animal Developmental Biology in 1980 and subsequently graduating M.B. Ch.B. in 1983. He entered psychiatry in 1984, passing the MRCPsych examination in 1988. From 1988-1992 he held the post of Lecturer in Psychological Medicine at the University of Glasgow medical school. He has been a Consultant Psychiatrist at Gartnavel Royal Hospital and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, University of Glasgow, since 1992. He specialises in the field of addiction psychiatry and is currently Chair of the Medical Council on Alcohol education committee. He has interests in philosophy, the arts and history in relation to psychiatry and how these three perspectives can be integrated into psychiatric training. He graduated M.D. at University of Glasgow in 2018 on the basis of his thesis exploring the medical response to alcohol problems in Scotland from 1855 to 1925.
The Journal Committee is chaired by Dr Peter Rice:
Dr Peter Rice, FRCPsych, is the Chair of SHAAP, Vice President of the European Alcohol Policy Aliiance, Consultant to WHO Europe and is a former Consultant Psychiatrist, NHS Tayside Alcohol Problems Service and Honorary Senior Lecturer, Medical School, University of Dundee. He has researched and published on health information and communication, on the counselling relationship in alcohol misuse treatment, as well as on more traditional medical topics such as cell changes in oral cancer. He is involved in strategic issues both locally and nationally, in the planning and delivering of integrated, multi-agency care and treatment. He was one of the group of doctors who campaigned for evidence based alcohol policy in Scotland, including the introduction of minimum unit price.
